Definition: A localized hyperplasia of bone within the jaws, often associated with external root resorption of adjacent teeth.
Radiographic Features:
- Location: Can occur anywhere in maxilla or mandible
- Edge: Well-defined
- Shape: No specific shape; variable
- Internal:
- Radiopaque
- Radiopacity similar to cortical bone
- Number: May be single or multiple
Key Diagnostic Signs:
- Localized area of increased bone density
- Possible root resorption of adjacent teeth
Clinical Significance:
- Usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally
- No treatment typically required unless causing complications
- May complicate orthodontic tooth movement in affected area
- Important to monitor for potential impact on adjacent teeth
Note: While similar in appearance to enostosis, focal idiopathic osteosclerosis is more likely to be associated with root resorption. Regular follow-up is advisable to monitor for any changes or effects on surrounding structures.
