Mandibular Tori

Definition: Benign bony overgrowths (hyperostosis) on the lingual aspect of the mandible.

Radiographic Features:

  • Location:
    • Visible on mandibular periapical radiographs
    • Sometimes seen on bitewing radiographs
    • Most commonly observed on mandibular anterior periapicals
  • Edge: Well-defined to well-localized
  • Shape: Round to ovoid
  • Internal:
    • Radiopaque
    • Radiopacity similar to surrounding bone
  • Number:
    • May be single (unilateral)
    • More commonly multiple (bilateral)

Key Diagnostic Sign:

  • Radiopaque, rounded projections on lingual mandibular surface

Clinical Significance:

  • Usually asymptomatic
  • Can interfere with denture fitting or placement
  • May complicate oral hygiene maintenance
  • Rarely require treatment unless causing functional issues

Note: While typically visible on radiographs, clinical examination is crucial for definitive diagnosis. The bilateral nature of mandibular tori is a common characteristic that aids in identification.
