Oligodontia

Definition: The developmental absence of multiple teeth (typically six or more, excluding third molars).

Radiographic Features:

  • Location: Can affect any area of maxilla or mandible
  • Appearance: Absence of tooth/teeth in expected locations
  • Number: Multiple missing teeth (usually 6 or more)

Key points:

  • Most commonly affected teeth (in order):
    1. Third molars
    2. Second premolars
    3. Maxillary lateral incisors
    4. Mandibular central incisors
  • Differentiate from:
    • Anodontia (complete absence of teeth)
    • Hypodontia (absence of 1-5 teeth)

Clinical significance:

  • May require prosthodontic or orthodontic intervention
  • Can be associated with certain syndromes
  • Early diagnosis allows for better treatment planning

Note: Confirm diagnosis by considering patient age and normal eruption timelines to rule out delayed tooth development.
