Palatal Tori

Definition: A benign hyperostosis (bony overgrowth) of the hard palate.

Radiographic Features:

  • Location: Visible on maxillary periapical radiographs
  • Edge: Well-defined
  • Shape:
    • Round
    • Ovoid
    • Lobular
  • Internal:
    • Radiopaque
    • Radiopacity similar to surrounding bone
  • Number:
    • Single entity
    • May appear lobular, giving impression of multiple growths

Key Diagnostic Sign:

  • Radiopaque, well-defined growth in the midline of hard palate

Clinical Significance:

  • Generally asymptomatic
  • Can interfere with upper denture fitting and stability
  • May complicate speech or swallowing if very large
  • Rarely require treatment unless causing functional issues

Note: While radiographs can reveal palatal tori, clinical examination is essential for accurate diagnosis. The lobular appearance on radiographs should not be mistaken for multiple separate entities.
