Definition: A benign hyperostosis (bony overgrowth) of the hard palate.
Radiographic Features:
- Location: Visible on maxillary periapical radiographs
- Edge: Well-defined
- Shape:
- Round
- Ovoid
- Lobular
- Internal:
- Radiopaque
- Radiopacity similar to surrounding bone
- Number:
- Single entity
- May appear lobular, giving impression of multiple growths
Key Diagnostic Sign:
- Radiopaque, well-defined growth in the midline of hard palate
Clinical Significance:
- Generally asymptomatic
- Can interfere with upper denture fitting and stability
- May complicate speech or swallowing if very large
- Rarely require treatment unless causing functional issues
Note: While radiographs can reveal palatal tori, clinical examination is essential for accurate diagnosis. The lobular appearance on radiographs should not be mistaken for multiple separate entities.
