Rhinolith

Definition: A calcified mass formed within the nasal cavity.

Radiographic Features:

  • Location:
    • Nasal cavity
    • Appears superior to nasal cavity floor on pantomograph
  • Edge:
    • Well-defined
    • Smooth or irregular outline
  • Shape:
    • Round
    • Ovoid
    • Irregular
  • Internal:
    • Radiopaque
    • May show ‘laminated’ appearance (alternating radiopaque and radiolucent bands)
    • Resembles layers of an onion due to continued calcium salt deposition
  • Number: Typically single

Key Diagnostic Signs:

  • Radiopaque mass in nasal cavity
  • Possible laminated internal structure

Clinical Significance:

  • Can cause nasal obstruction, discharge, or foul odor
  • May lead to sinusitis or other complications if left untreated
  • Removal is usually necessary for symptomatic cases

Note: A maxillary standard occlusal radiograph can help determine the location before recommending a cone beam CT. Differential diagnosis from other calcified masses in the region is important for proper management.
