Radiographic Features:

  • Location: Can occur anywhere in maxilla or mandible
    • Mesiodens: More common in maxilla (anterior region)
    • Peridens: More common in mandible (premolar region)
    • Distodens: Molar region
  • Edge: Well-defined

  • Internal structure: Mixed radiopaque/radiolucent
    • Radiopaque: Enamel and dentin
    • Radiolucent: Pulp chamber and root canal
  • Number: Single or multiple

Key points:

  • Classification based on location:
    1. Mesiodens (anterior)
    2. Peridens (premolar)
    3. Distodens (molar)
  • May interfere with eruption of adjacent teeth

Clinical significance:

  • Can cause malocclusion, crowding, or impaction of permanent teeth
  • May require surgical removal or orthodontic intervention
  • Early detection is crucial for proper treatment planning

Note: Thorough radiographic examination is essential for accurate diagnosis and localization of supernumerary teeth.
